DescriptionDSHS ESA Legal Assistant 2Economic Service Administration (ESA) Division of Child Support (DCS) is looking for a Legal Assistant 2 to join their team. As the Legal Assistant 2, you will independently perform journey level legal support functions for attorneys and professional staff that assist in representing DCS.The ESA DCS Legal Assistant 2 will gather information to prepare legal documents, notices, and administrative hearing exhibits that establish legal obligations.This position can work out of any of the following DCS Offices: Everett, Kennewick, Olympia, Spokane, Tacoma, Vancouver, Wenatchee, Yakima.Some of what you will do:
- Independently perform legal support for DCS
- Gather and review receipts and accounting forms to prepare complicated calculations involving multiple underlying court and administrative orders, time periods, and legal obligations to assist with annual reviews of existing orders
- Utilize complex computerized systems to research, extract, summarize, and evaluate data related to family composition, income, and resources
- Receive and respond to telephone and visitor inquiries by using DCS programs to resolve issues and/or relay information
- Prepare, send and monitor the progress of documents sent for legal service; and ensure documents are properly served on appropriate persons
- Certify compliance with SCRA rules and regulations by accessing federal information to ensure due process requirements are met in case involving military parties
- Facilitate agreed continuances or assist in scheduling contested continuance matters by contacting the parties, their representative and the Office of Administrative Hearings to arrange for appearance by the attorneys
- Facilitate require personnel appearances, coordinate schedules and arrange times
What we are looking for:
- Knowledge and understanding of the hearing process
- Knowledge of legal terminology
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal court boards and commissions rules and their applications
- Knowledge of database/index systems and discovery procedures
- Ability to use litigation software and case management systems
- Ability to prepare legal pleadings
- Understand and apply procedures, policies and guidelines
- Exhibit excellent oral and written communication
Who should apply?High School diploma or equivalent and two years of experience in a legal environment in support of an attorney, administrative law judge(s), industrial insurance appeals judge(s), review judge(s) or equivalentOr
One year as a Legal Assistant 1
Or
A two-year degree in Legal Secretary Studies, Paralegal Studies or related field plus one year of legal office experience
Or
A combination of four years of college education and/or relevant experience.
A Bachelor’s degree may substitute for the Legal Secretary or Paralegal degree.Note: Candidates may be required to demonstrate skills in keyboarding, filing, proofreading, grammar, spelling and use of office equipment through agency specific skills testing.
